Competition Guide

A Guide to our Competitions and Trophies in 2024

All playing members, including juniors with WHI 36 or less, are eligible to enter ALL of the competitions. The DALCGA season starts with the Intercounty Foursomes/Commonwealth Spoons Competition in April. The season comprises six 18-hole medal rounds and one competition which is in Stableford format. Where possible, in these competitions, players will be pre-drawn in groups of three with others of similar handicaps. In medals, prizes will be awarded to players with the best scratch score, and winning nett scores in both division 1 and 2. A triam or Greensome Competition is included in the fixture list and the season ends with the Winter Foursomes which is a knock-out competition running from October to March.

The County is fortunate to have been donated many trophies over the years and these are awarded in competitions throughout the year. These are detailed below. In addition, success in some competions allows entry into regional or national competitions. Details of these are outlined below.

Intercounty Foursomes/Commonwealth Spoons

Enter with a partner (or contact the Committee if you require a partner). In the Intercounty Foursomes, the top two Scratch and top four couples on Handicap go forward to represent DALCGA in the Intercounty Foursomes Finals (at Balmore GC on 10th June 2024). (D&A, Renfrewshire, Lanarkshire and Ayrshire)

The Commonwealth Spoons is played in conjunction with the Intercounty Foursomes competition. The leading pairs on handicap qualify to play in the area finals (Ballumbie Castle GC on 2nd September 2024). The number of couples qualifying for the area finals depends upon the number of entrants - one couple per 10 entrants can qualify,  5 and over add 1 couple e.g. 56 = 6 couples.

The qualifying couples for the will be notified by the DALCGA committee prior to the finals.

Order of Merit

Competitors who have been ‘placed’ in competitions throughout the season are awarded points dependent on how far they were up the leader board. Points collected over the season are collated and the winner in each division is the player who has accumulated the most points.

Winter Foursomes; Wallace Salver

Knock-out match play. Each game is over 18 holes from November through to March – around 5 matches for the finalists at gaps of approximately 4 weeks between rounds. Enter with a partner (or contact the Committee if you require a partner). The winners are awarded the Wallace Salver. To calculate your handicap you add your course handicap with your playing partners course handicap then divide by 2. the difference between your team handicap and your competitors is the shot allowance. If it is say 4.5 then it is rounded up to 5 shots.

From October 2025 the allowance of shots will change in the winter foursomes when there are 4 or more temporary greens in play on the day of your match. On these dates you then reduce the shot allowance by 25%, so for example if you were to give 8 shots to your competitors then due to temporary greens you will only give 6 shots instead.

Margaret Gibson Trophy
